Sometimes beginners ask an interesting question: can you mate by moving the king? Sure! That’s our mate in three for today.


A composition by G. Heathcote in 1920. The king gets to uncover the final mating move in every line: 1.Qg2 Kc6 [1...Bb7 2.Bd7 g4+ (2...Bd4 3.Kg4#) 3.Kxg4#; 1...Bc8 2.Bxc8 g4+ 3.Kxg4#] 2.Be6 Be3 [2...Kb7 3.Kg4#] 3.Kg4#
