Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

A wild game from 1926.

White could have gone terribly wrong here by queening the pawn right away as it would be White that was then mated! 1.Qxa1 [1.a8Q Qxf1+ 2.Kxf1 b1Q+ 3.Qe1 Qd3+ 4.Kg1 Qg6+ 5.Kh1 Qg2#] 1...bxa1=Q 2.a8=Q and Black Resigned
