Black/White to Play

This is an endgame that shows how one move makes a difference. Try White first, then do Black. White first wins. Black first draws.

A study by Grigoriev. White wins very easily by moving first: 1.Kf3 Kd6 2.Ke4 Kc5 3.Ke5 Kc6 4.Kd4 Kb6 5.Kc4 Ka5 6.Kc5 Ka6 7.Kxb4 Now, with it being black’s move, it’s a different story: 1...Kd6! [1...Kc6? 2.Kg3 Kc5 3.Kg4 Kd4 4.Kf4 Kc3 5.a5 Kxb3 6.a6 Kc2 7.a7 b3 8.a8Q b2 9.Qa4+ Kc1 10.Qc4+ Kd2 11.Qb3 Kc1 12.Qc3+ Kb1 13.Qc4 Ka1 14.Qa4+ Kb1 15.Ke4 Kc1 16.Qc4+ Kb1 17.Kd3 Ka1 18.Qa4+ Kb1 19.Kc3 Kc1 20.Qc2#]2.Kf3 Kd5 3.Ke3 Ke5 and the black king keeps the white king out. It’s a matter for Black of keeping White off e4, d4 or c4.
