White to Play

Although this looks like the last puzzle, it’s shifted over a bit, and that makes a difference! One bad move and White can blow a win here.

In this solution, you learn that it matters when you advance a pawn—and which pawn! 1.Kd3 This also works, but you have to be careful: 1.Kf4 Kf6 2.Kg4 (White only draws with 2.e5+?? Kf7 3.Kg5 Kg7 4.Kf4 Kf7 5.Ke4 Ke7 6.Kd3 Kd7 7.Kc4 Kc6 8.Kb4 Kb6 9.Ka4 Kc6) 2...Kg7 3.Kg5 Kf7 4.Kh6 Kf6 5.e5+ and now wins! 1...Kd6 2.Kc4 Kc6 3.e5 Kb6 4.d5 exd5+ Not taking loses, too; 4...Kc7 5.d6+ Kc6 6.Kd4 Kb6 7.d7 Kc7 8.Kc5 Kxd7 9.Kb6 Kd8 10.Kc6 Ke7 11.Kc7 Ke8 12.Kd6 Kd8 13.Kxe6 Ke8 14.Kf6 Kf8 15.e6 Ke8 16.e7 5.Kxd5 Kc7 6.Ke6 Kd8 7.Kf7 and the pawn promotes. It’s good to remember that “end run” around the strong side.
