Here’s another “Eight pawns across” composition, this one by arguably America’s greatest composer: William Shinkman. This could be a fun example even for kids’ classes. I found this in a great puzzle book: 100 Classics of the Chessboard by A.s.M. Dickins and H. Ebert (1983). The puzzle itself appeared in Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1903.

A knightmare! 1.b8N+ Rxb8 [1...Kd6 2.c8N+] 2.axb8N+ Kd6 3.c8N+ Ke6 4.d8N+ Bxd8 [4...Kf6 5.e8N#]5.exd8N+ Kf6 6.g8N+ Qxg8 7.hxg8N+ Rxg8 8.fxg8N#
