This will be our last composed problem for a while (we do like to give those of you who like them a chance to have at it) as we will start on more practical situations next week. It’s a mate in 4 that revolves around that pawn on b2 promoting to a queen and causing havoc. How do the pieces prepare for that?

Composed by Langstaff circa 1920. I love the first move because, if you didn’t see it, it’s one of those “Of course! Common sense!” moves you mutter about to yourself. 1.Bd4 e3 [1...b1Q+ 2.Nd1+! Qb2 3.Rc1#] 2.Ne2 Kb1 3.Rxb2+ Ka1 4.Rb3#
