A wacky beginning begets a wacky ending. Rusakov-Verlinsky, Moscow, 1947, started out 1. e4 e5 2. c3 Nc6 3. d4 Nf6 4. Bg5 h6 5. Bh4 g5 6. Bg3 exd4 7. e5 dxc3 8. exf6 cxb2 9. Qe2+ and now Black is in check and White’s about to recover the pawn on b2. What does Black do? SEE DIAGRAM


9…Qe7 10. fxe7 Bg7 and it’s over. Black’s material gains are decisive!
