White to Play

This is a delightful game to take your board out and play over. The good doctor played his wife in Germany in 1884. I hope she took the loss well. Dr. Michaelson--Mrs. Michaelson, Germany, 1884: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 f5? (Not to be recommended. White's reply is thematic and good.) 4. d4! fxe4 5. Nxe5 Nf6 (Apparently protecting from Qh5+.) 6. Bc4 d5 (The d-pawn is attacked twice and defended twice, so it should be secure, but that overlooks the point that the N on f6 is protecting another key square as well.) 7. Nxd5! Nxd5 8. Qh5+ g6 9. Nxg6 Nf6 (And Black figures she is OK after Qg5.) SEE DIAGRAM

10.Bf7+!! (Ouch!) Kxf7 (The real fun is in the "long" variation. Worth playing out.} 10... Kd7 11. Qh3+ Kd6 12. Bf4+ Ne5 13. Qa3+ Kc6 14. Nxe5+ Kb6 15. Qb3+Ka6 16. Qa4+ Kb6 17. Nc4#) 11. Ne5+ Ke7 12. Qf7+ Kd6 13. Nc4#
