Continuing our tactical alertness in the opening series with a game from a young Karpov as Black. He spots a way to win a piece.

Sangla-Karpov, Riga, 1968: 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 e6 3. Bg5 c5 4. c3 cxd4 5. cxd4 Qb6 6. Qb3 Ne4 7. Bf4 Nc6 8. e3 Bb4+ 9. Nbd2 (See Diagram) g5 10. Bxg5 Bxd2+ and wins a piece! After the knight captures the bishop, Black plays Qa5 with a double attack on g5 and d2. Handy trick to remember! Kudos if you saw it.
