White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

It’s funny where you can run into chess problems. I ran into this one on facebook this morning and just had to share. White is threatened with a mate in one yet can still engineer a draw.

Solution:

My thanks to Rooney Simonaitis and GM Ron Henley who brought Instant Chess’s post to public attention. A composition by Sidorov 1.Bh2 Bxh2 2.g3 Bxg3 3.Rf4 Bxf4 4.d6 Bxd6 5.Qh2 Bxh2 6.Re5 Bxe5 7.Nab5 Bf4 8.f6 Bxc7+ 9.Nxc7 That Black 7th move is a gem of an idea.
