White to Play

Here’s an elementary endgame, but can you see the most precise finish by White?

Solution:

Oddly enough, the first move doesn’t have to be a check: 1.Qc7 Rb7 2.Qc8+ Rb8 3.Qc6+ Rb7 4.Ka6 Kb8 5.Qxb7# You could also have checked with the queen and then gone to d7 with the same idea. However, did you see this fun line?-- 1.Qc7 Ra6+ 2.Kb4 Rb6+ 3.Kc5 Rb2 4.Qc8+ Rb8 5.Qc6+ Rb7 6.Kd6 a5 7.Qa6+ Kb8 8.Qxa5 Rg7 9.Qe5 Rc7 10.Qe8+ Rc8 11.Qe4 Rc7 12.Qe5 Rb7 13.Kc6+ Ka7 14.Qa1+ Kb8 15.Qa5 Rb1 16.Qd8+ Ka7 17.Qd4+ Kb8 18.Qh8+ Ka7 19.Qh7+ Kb8 20.Qxb1+ Kc8 21.Qb7+ Kd8 22.Qd7# You have to be methodical about picking off the rook with the right check. An ending not to be underestimated.
