White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

In this study by Horwitz and Kling in 1851, Black seems to have the defense well in hand. Can you find a way for White to win this?

Solution:

White does find a way by giving up two of the three pawns just to get one in to promote: 1.Kg5 Kf7 2.Kf5 Bc6 3.Ke5 Ba4 4.Kd6 Be8 5.Kc7 Bb5 6.Kd8 Bc6 7.g8Q+ Kxg8 8.e8=Q+ Bxe8 9.Kxe8 and the last pawn promotes.
