Black to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
(Important note: I messed up the template last week and three problems I sent in did not appear. Arcamax has kindly put them in the archive, so you have a bonus trio of problems!) In this game, Begun-Kapengut, 1978, White’s position doesn’t look bad at all; however, Black played one move and White Resigned!
Solution:
Simply because the White king is in such a cramped spot and has lost his castling privilege, Black used his control of the f-file to advantage by playing <1…Bh6!/> White gets mated if the queen takes either the bishop or the queen and loses the queen with any other move, so he resigned.
