White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
We’re looking at “one-move wonders.” A player makes one move and the opponent resigns. Uhlmann-Balanel, Erfut, 1955, was such a circumstance. In this position, it looks like Black may just get to scramble his king to safety, when White played one move and Black resigned. What was the move?
Solution:
White wins decisive material with l.Qxd8! Bxd8 2.Nd6+ and the knight will escape, leaving White a rook up.
