White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

This week, we’re looking at some of the fun they used to have in the 19th century with unusual problems. This one is a creative gem by legendary American problemist, William A. Shinkman. It is White to play and HELP Black mate in four moves. That means both sides cooperate to enable Black to produce a checkmate. Here’s a big, but tricky, hint: All three pawns promote in the solution!! Think carefully about that. Please remember: White moves first. Black mates on its fourth move.

Solution:

1.Rg1 hxg1=B 2.a8=R+ Ba7 3.Rg8 h2 4.Rg1 hxg1=Q#
