White to Play

We conclude this week’s study of kingside attacks with a very instructive game well worth playing over to see how White not only sets up his attck, but takes advantage of Black mistakes. The game was Sheremetieva-Sero,, Yugoslavia, 1992 and started out this way: 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7 5.Nf3 c6 6.Bd3 0–0 7.0–0 Nbd7 8.e5 dxe5 9.fxe5 Ng4 10.Qe1 c5 11.Qh4 cxd4 12.Nd5 Ndxe5 13.Nxe7+ Kh8 14.Ng5 h6 which brings us to our diagrammed position. We reserve Fridays for the more complicated positions, so there is a whole attack about to take place that goes quite a few moves. See how far you can get with the ideas in the position.

Solution:

The attack went this way: 15.Nxf7+ Nxf7 16.Nxg6+ Kg8 17.Ne7+ Kh8 18.Rxf7 Be6 19.Rxg7 Kxg7 20.Bxh6+ Black Resigns. This would be the really cool finish:20...Nxh6 21.Qg5+ Kf7 22.Bg6+ Kg7 23.Be8+ Kh7 24.Qg6+ Kh8 25.Qxh6# You should play through this game several times and take special note of the destruction of the castled king’s pawn protection using sacrifices.
