White to Play

In our sixth week in chess summer school, we’re trying to get you to think more than a few moves ahead. It’s a little easier because all the moves to mate are checks! When you look at this position, you should realize something. In order to attack a castled position, you have to aim your pieces at the enemy king’s position. Try and get as many of your pieces over there as you can. Most experienced players will reach this position and “feel” this is the moment to attack. That’s why we emphasize looking at checks, captures and forced moves. It gives you a routine to follow. There are several different checks in a given position, so you go through them all. Good luck!

- Solution: If you didn’t get it, then the best thing you can do is look at the solution and then play it through in your head from the diagram and keep doing it until you can go all the way through it: 1.Bh7+ Kh8 2.Nxf7+ Rxf7 3.Ng6+ Kxh7 4.Nf8+ Kg8 5.Qh7+ Kxf8 6.Qh8# It’s interesting how the king is blocked from escape by his jumbled up pieces. That’s usually a good clue that it’s time to attack.
