White to Play

This position is a composition by O. Kaila that I found in Chervev’s “Chess Caviar.” It’s a stunning creation. Give it a shot. White to play and win.

- Solution: My chess engine called this a draw before I inputted the first move, so even computers had a tough time with this: 1.Nh1 e5 [Obviously not 1...Kxh1 2.Kf2 e5 3.Bxg2#; however, to defeat the promotion to a queen by Black requires some ingenious effort: 1...gxh1=Q 2.Bxh1 Kxh1 3.Kf1 e5 4.f5 e4 5.f6 e3 6.f7 e2+ 7.Kxe2 Kg2 8.f8Q h1Q 9.Qf3+ Kh2 10.Qh5+ Kg1 11.Qc5+ Kh2 12.Qe5+ Kg2 13.Qe4+ Kg1 14.Qd4+ Kh2 15.Qh4+ Kg2 16.Qg4+ Kh2 17.Kf2 Qe1+ 18.Kxe1 Kh1 19.Kf1 Kh2 20.Qg2#] 2.Bxg2 exf4 3.Ba8 f3+ 4.Kxf3 Kxh1 5.Kf2# A marvelous creative effort to appreciate even if you couldn’t solve it.
