We’re taking game positions from the new Alekhine book by Isaak and Vladimir Linder (Russell Enterprises). I’ve been impressed by their attention to the details of Alekhine’s life, some of which is quite new to me. I also enjoy their use of historical themes in chess. For example, experienced players will immediately look at one move that ends the game here because they know of the games the authors point out in the book that have the same theme.

Solution: The authors point out the original Levitsky-Marshall 1912 position, the Rossolimo-Reissmann game from 1967 and the Kasparov-Ljubojevic position from 1987. This was Alekhine-Supico, Lisbon, 1941. So, it’s definitely worth knowing! 1.Qg6 fxg6 [1...Rg8 2.Qxh7+ Kxh7 3.Rh3#; 1...Bxc4 2.Qxg7#; 1...hxg6 2.Rh3#] 2.Nxg6+ hxg6 3.Rh3+
