White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This position is from an actual game, Najdorf-Curtis, 1985. Najdorf, in the 40s and 50s was one of the top ten players in the world, yet here, a bit older, he missed a win. How does White win?

Solution:

The wrong way, the way Najdorf chose, was 1.Qxc3 Qxf2+ 2.Kg5 f6+ 3.Qxf6 Qh4+ 4.Kxh4 g5+ and it’s stalemate next move, no matter what. The right way was 1.Qd4 Rxh3+ 2.Kxh3 Qh1+ 3.Kg3 Qg1+ 4.Kf3 Qh1+ 5.Ke2 Kh6 6.Qf6 with an unavoidable mate.
