This is one of the most notorious final positions in chess history. At Monte Carlo in 1902, VonPopiel has just played 36.Rd1, and his opponent, Georg Marco, a very strong player and editor of Wiener Schachzeitung, resigned because of the upcoming loss of a piece. However, his resignation was unwarranted. What could he have done to save himself?

Solution:

Marco could have made VonPopiel resign if he had played 36…Bg1, threatening mate at h2 and win of the queen at d3. White couldn’t stop both threats.
