White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

This position is from an offhand game won by Helling in Berlin in 1933. Black seems to have protected his first rank and is ready to exchange queens. What can White do about this?

Solution:

Sometimes a very understated move can end it all. White plays 1.Bd6 Rxd6 [1...Qc4 2.Rf8#; 1...Qxb3 2.Rf8#; 1...h5 2.Qxe6+ Kh7 3.Qxe4+ Kh6 4.Rf6+ gxf6 5.Bf8+ Kg5 6.h4#] 2.Qb8+ Rd8 3.Qxd8+ Qe8 4.Qxe8#
