Here’s another mate with just a few pieces on the board. Composed by Speckman in 1957. Not much on the board, but a lot goes on. And, yes, you’re not being told how many moves to the forced mate. You must find the fastest mate.

Solution:

Here’s the slow way--1.Kh6 Bf4+ 2.Kh5 [2.Kg6 Ne5+] 2...Ne5 3.Qa4 Bc1 4.Qe8+ Kg7 5.Qxe5+ Kf7 6.Kg4 Bb2 7.Qxb2 and it takes another six moves. A faster way-- 1.Qxd3 Bf4+ 2.Kg6 Bg5 3.Qc3+ Bf6 4.Qxf6+ Kg8 5.Qg7# and now the fastest way-- 1.Kf6 Be5+ 2.Kg6 Nf4+ 3.Kh6 Kg8 4.Qe8#
