White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

We will end this week with one last bishop vs. knight ending to see if you “get it.” The rooks are thrown in to make it a tiny bit more complicated. It’s also from a Fischer game, who was White vs. Reshevsky in their match in 1961.

Solution:

Fischer actually messed this endgame up and only drew! When we get to move three, he played Be4, which fails to trap the knight. The win is 1.Rc7+ Rf7 [1...Kg8 2.Rc8+ Rf8 3.Rxf8+ Kxf8 4.Bb5; 1...Kf8 2.Rc8+] 2.Rxf7+ Kxf7 3.Bb5 Ke7 4.Kg4 Nd7 5.Bxd7 Kxd7 6.Kh5 with an easy win.
