White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
Here’s a classic. In fact, it may be the first example of an “epaulette mate.” Played by Paul Morphy against an amateur in the 19th century.
Solution:
The epaulette comes about when the king is flanked by its own two rooks and can’t escape check for that very reason: 1.Rf8+ Qxf8 2.Rxf8+ Rxf8 3.Qxg6#
