White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

With composed problems, we usually stick with mates in two, but here’s a mate in three with a hint: As White, you only move one piece the whole time!

Solution:

This composition is from J. Hartong way back in November of 1918. Oddly, enough, it’s the piece farthest away that does all the work: 1.Ke7 Kh6 [1...h6 2.Kf7 Kf4 3.Kxg6#] 2.Kf6 g5 3.Kf7#
