White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

Here is another foray into endgames, this time a study by B. Horwitz. As blocked as the position is, there is a win for White here, and it is calculable. Obviously, you have to come up with a plan for the knight that goes pretty deep in the number of moves it will take.

Solution:

If you’re good at knight paths and you also realize there has to be a breakthrough sacrifice with the knight, then you are on your way to solving it. You will also need the king nearby to help push the pawn through after the sac. Then you have to decide which side is best. A close look should reveal that would be the queenside: (this is a good one to do in your head)

1.Nb8 Ke8 2.Na6 Ke7 [2...Be7 3.Nxc7+] 3.Kd4 Ke8 4.Kc4 Ke7 5.Nb4 axb4 [5...Ke8 6.Nd3 Be7 7.Kd4 Kf8 (7...Kd8 8.Nf4 Bf8 (8...Ke8 9.Ne6 Bf8 10.Nxc7+) 9.Ne6+ Ke8 10.Nxc7+) 8.Nf4 Kg8 9.Ne6] 6.Kxb4 Ke8 7.a5 bxa5+ 8.Kxa5 Ke7 9.Ka6 Ke8 10.Kb7 Ke7 11.Kc8 Ke8 12.b6 cxb6 13.c7 Bxc7 14.Kxc7 b5 15.Kxd6 Kd8 16.Kc5 Kc7 17.Kxb5 Kd6 18.Kc4 easily wins
