White to Play

There is not too much in the way of pieces on the board, but you still have to figure out how to win it for White.

Solution:

The trick of the key first move is to give the White queen some room to maneuver. The overall plan is to, at all costs, keep that king in the corner and only let him out when you can mate him or win his queen: 1.Kh3 Qg7 [1...Qf7 2.Qd4+ Kg8 3.Bc4] 2.Qd8+ Qg8 3.Qf6+ [The reason you have to check here first rather than go right to a Qh4+ is that you want the Black queen to occupy g7 because if 3.Qh4+ Kg7 and the king escapes!] 3...Qg7 4.Qh4+ Kg8 5.Bc4+ Qf7 [5...Kf8 6.Qd8#] 6.Bxf7+ Kxf7 7.Qe4 Kf6 8.Kg4 Kg7 9.Kf5 Kf7 10.Qb7+ Kf8 11.Kf6 Kg8 12.Qg7#
