VIENNA -- The number of new coronavirus infections per day has hit an all-time high, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday, noting a global jump in 230,000 cases in the past 24 hours.

This puts the number of people infected worldwide at 12.5 million, while 562,000 COVID-19 patients have died.

In the past day, the United States has counted 66,000 new cases, Brazil 45,000 and India 28,000. Russia, Turkey and parts of Europe have also noted a renewed spike in cases in recent days.

The WHO also announced it has sent two experts to China to work with local experts to prepare a WHO-led investigation to identify the exact origin of the pandemic.
