RALEIGH, N.C. (UPI) -- A missing cat was returned to its family in Illinois after mysteriously traveling more than 700 miles to North Carolina.

Lazarus, a grey and white cat from Illinois, turned up in a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina about 740 miles from his home after going missing about three weeks earlier, according to Fox29.

Maddie O'Beirne discovered the wayward feline walking around near her home and later discovered it didn't belong to anyone in the neighborhood.

She and her boyfriend later took the cat to a local veterinarian where a microchip led them to Lazarus's owner Roy Finley in Illinois.

"They were in Illinois," O'Beirne told The News and Observer. We were both flummoxed.

Finley drove about 24 hours over the smokey mountains to pick up Lazarus and was grateful to O'Beirne for taking care of his missing pet in the interim.

"Fabulous people," he said. They're clear in North Carolina. They could have kept their mouth shut and kept a great cat. It's like somebody found your wallet in the park full of cash.

Finley was mystified by how Lazarus made the lengthy journey but recalled hearing about North Carolina hunters seeking deer near hunting grounds by his house and speculated Lazarus may have unwittingly hitched a ride with them.

"I don't think hunters came clear from North Carolina to steal my cat," he said.

Lazarus also may have simply wandered all the way to North Carolina by himself, but despite some light prodding from Finley the true answer remains a mystery.

"The main question I've been asked 100 times so far is how does a cat get to North Carolina?" Finley said. We asked him questions about what happened. Every so often, we get a meow out of him.
