We had an outhouse when I was very young. In winter, one would half-freeze to death just to go potty. Summer was worse. Wasps and hornets are particularly attracted to outhouses, and there are times when using the facilities, so to speak, results in painful stings or the utter loss of dignity as one flies out of the outhouse to escape an especially irritable hornet. In addition, it was damp, smelly, and attracted cob-web producing spiders by the hundreds. I do not have even the slightly wisp of nostalgia for outhouses! Give me "fancy" indoor plumbing any day!
