Mandatory evolution classes proposed

LONDON (UPI) -- The British government is moving toward mandating evolution be taught in all public primary schools as a science subject starting in September 2011.

The measure was introduced Thursday in the House of Commons, The Times of London reported.

While science education in Britain would have to include discussion of the theory of evolution and natural selection, each school will be allowed to decide how the subject is to be addressed.

A Department for Children, Schools and Families spokesman said a school could teach evolutionary theory in a context that followed the school's fundamental values.

"You could do that within the ethos of the school. If as a school, in consultation with governors and parents, you have a particular take on that, you would still be able to do that," the unidentified spokesman said.

The proposal to make evolution teachings mandatory in British state schools was backed by more than 500 supporters, including scientists, who signed an online petition.

"This is excellent news," said Andrew Copson of the British Humanist Association, which led the campaign. "Evolution is arguably the most important concept underlying the life sciences.

"Providing children with an understanding of it an early age will help lay the foundations for a surer scientific understanding later on."
