Brown to vigorously defend Afghan war
The newspaper said Brown's Monday night remarks will be aimed at countering critics who say the country has no real mission in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, citing the contimnuing threat from al-Qaida militants who are linked to the Taliban and are recruiting extensively while teaching bomb-making and weapons skills.
The Times said Brown will say: "Vigilance in defense of national security will never be sacrificed to expediency. Necessary resolution will never succumb to appeasement. The greater international good will never be subordinated to the mood of the passing moment."
Brown reportedly will remind listeners that since 2001, nearly 200 people have been convicted of terror-related crimes, showing a continuing threat from Islamic militants.
The prime minister will "vigorously defend our action in Afghanistan and Pakistan because al-Qaida is today the biggest source of threat to our national security -- and to the security of peoples lives in Britain," The Times said.
