Rains, flooding hit Scotland, Wales

HUNTLY, Scotland (UPI) -- Hundreds of Britons were evacuated from their homes as heavy rains triggered floods in Scotland and elsewhere, officials said Monday.

Aberdeen, Scotland, received more than an 1 1/2 inches of rain Sunday, with slightly less falling in Glasgow and Edinburgh, as some 100 people were rescued from the overflowing River Deveron in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, The Times of London reported.

"I think most of the people have been rescued, but all the crews are searching properties to make sure no one is trapped," a Huntly fire service spokesman told the newspaper, adding no injuries had been reported so far.

Huntly resident Raymond Strachan, 55, told The Times the floodwaters had destroyed his vehicles and had risen five feet inside his home.

"I've never seen flooding like this before. It was a torrent. The water rose quickly within half an hour and continued for more than two hours," he said.

Wales was also hard hit by rain, officials said, with rescuers reportedly spending Sunday removing people from flooded homes and cars in such places as Meidrim, Carmarthenshire, Landore, Swansea and Newcastle Emlyn.
