U.K. youths taking over House of Commons

LONDON (UPI) -- Britain's House of Commons Friday, for the first time, rang with debate by someone other than Members of Parliament, organizers of a youth parliament said.

The opening speaker, Johnny Gilcrist, advocated taking money from the Trident budget, which he labeled a "cold war relic," The Guardian reported. He was countered by another young parliamentarian who contended personal investment in education is "a rational choice" at 18.

Charity Mhende, a 16-year-old representing the town of Solihull in Friday's United Kingdom Youth Parliament session, said 300 representatives between the ages of 11 and 18 would spend their time in the hallowed building discussing topics vital to the nation's young people, the BBC reported.

"Tackling debate topics such as tuition fees, transport, crime, the economy and lowering the voting age really shows that anyone who thinks young people aren't interested in politics is extremely misinformed," Mhende said.

Derek Couper, one of 20 Scottish Youth Parliament representatives also taking part, said the gathering should reflect young people's interest in the political world.

"This event sends out a message to everyone that young people are passionate about key political issues," Couper, 18, told the BBC.

The youth event marked the first time the House of Commons has been used for debates by any one other than members of Parliament.

UK Youth and Parliament

I could not agree more. We seem to have a mind set that young people do not know what is going on in the world or even their country. Some may not, but those that do should be heard as they are our future and also possible future MP's. So listen you might learn soemthing instead of being old stick in the mud MP's.
