2 10-year-olds charged with rape

LONDON (UPI) -- Two 10-year-old London boys are suspected of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old playmate, police said Thursday.

Neighbors of the family said the victim's 6-year-old sister said she witnessed the alleged rape, The Daily Mail reported.

Investigators say the children were playing in College Park in the West London neighborhood of Hayes early Tuesday afternoon. The 8-year-old said the boys dragged her into the bushes and took turns assaulting her.

The children, who had the day off from school, were not being supervised by adults. The alleged victim's parents called police after she ran home and told them what had happened.

The boys, described as close friends, were arrested later Tuesday and questioned by police. They were released on bail.

"The boy is regularly left alone by his mum while she goes out for hours on end," a neighbor of one of the boys told the newspaper. "The boy's mother is known for being aggressive and she has a criminal record. But her son is as polite as can be."

David Yarrow, deputy mayor of the Hillingdon Council, called the charges "totally shocking." He compared it to the 1982 abduction and killing of toddler James Bulger by two 10-year-old boys.
