Royal Mail struggles to deliver backlog
Postal officials said about 30 million pieces of mail were delayed by recent strike days, the BBC reported. The Communication Workers Union said the actual number is more than twice that.
The union plans to call walkouts Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Trade Union Council,
the nation's main labor federation, said negotiations are scheduled for Monday.
The dispute, which has been building for months, centers on pay, working conditions and modernization that could cost jobs. Union members voted by a 3-1 margin in favor of nationwide walkouts this month, though the management said so few workers voted that a majority did not cast ballots in favor of a strike.
Mark Higson, managing director of the Royal Mail, said the union could avoid further job actions by accepting an offer on the table on Tuesday.
