Series of strikes hit Britain's Royal Mail

LONDON (UPI) -- A two-day strike by postal staff, collection workers and delivery drivers had delayed 30 million pieces of mail, Britain's Royal Mail service said Friday.

Three more days of walkouts are planned for next week, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The strikes are the first interruption in British mail service in two years. The nationwide walkouts, involving about 78,000 employees who belong to the Communication Workers Union, are over issues such as pay, working conditions and proposed postal reforms, the BBC reported.

The labor action was described as "appalling" by officials at the Royal Mail.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged both sides to negotiate an end to what he calls the "self-defeating" strike.

The Telegraph reported up to 12,000 Royal Mail managers may soon join the rolling walkouts. During the last national postal strike two years ago, the managers had volunteered to stay on the job to keep basic services going.

Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, under fire for not being more visible during the labor unrest, is to give his first interview in five weeks Sunday.

Member of Parliament Lindsay Hoyle, a member of the committee overseeing the Royal Mail, is one of those critical of Crozier, the Telegraph said.

"The question is why are we paying huge bonuses and salaries to Adam Crozier for him to have disappeared off the face of the Earth," Hoyle said

"He should be at the forefront of the negotiations to resolve this dispute."

Disappearing Adam Crozier

This is easy. The Government should have Crozier SACKED.

The first priority is to CUSTOMERS and if this means coming to terms and making PEACE with the workforce,

so be it.
