British politician says he's not a Nazi

LONDON (UPI) -- The leader of the controversial British National Party says he is not a Nazi and believes Winston Churchill would be a supporter of the BNP if he were alive.

Nick Griffin made the comments during the BBC program Question Time that was watched by more than 8 million people, the BBC reported Friday.

A spokesman for Griffin's party complained the Thursday broadcast focused entirely on Griffin's views and ignored newsworthy stories such as the postal strike, Afghanistan and Europe.

The BNP leader was booed at the start of the show and attacked by fellow panelists as well as the studio audience.

He said Islam did not fit in with "the fundamental values of British society" and admitted once sharing a platform with former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

Griffin blamed the "political elite" for imposing "an enormous multicultural experiment on the British people."
