When traveling to a foreign destination independently from a group travel, one can generally do better by shopping and dining at locations other than those mentioned in guidebooks. If one strays "off the beaten path," bargains are available in various ways. However, a good place to start is with your discount travel club if you have a membership. There may be coupons or discounts available for car rentals, dining, and entertainment. Bargains for dining may be found by simply following the locals. Restaurants and other eateries geared to the tourist trade are usually priced considerably higher and the quality might be less than desired. Another good indicator of where the locals eat is by watching when the restaurant is busy. Tourists tend to eat earlier than the locals A restaurant that is empty or not very busy until later in the evening is most likely patronized by the locals. Another way is by asking one of the locals. They have an idea where the good deals are and you get the added benefit of interacting with them. If you need to rent a car, the prices can vary considerably. One may want to take advantage of combination deals that offered as part of a flight and hotel package. This may be less expensive than a deal you could get on your own. If you do not book a combination package, you may save money but not renting the car until after you reach your destination. This is usually less expensive than renting in advance. Another important consideration is having insurance. There would be nothing worse than having to spend extra money you did not budget for a trip to cover loss or damage to the vehicle. Even though it may be tempting, do not rent a vehicle larger than you need. First, it will use a lot more gas than you need to pay for and you will save money on the rental. However if you feel that you need one ask about a free upgrade at the counter. They may or may not have one available but you do not know unless you ask. The most important consideration when renting a car is to fill the tank before you return. The rental car company will fill the tank at a considerably higher price than you could have on your own. Also, compare the cost of renting at the airport versus renting at the city you are visiting. Rental companies pay a high franchise fees to rent at the airport and this could be reflected in the price. ======== Carole Gardner is a Successful Level 3 Coastal Vacations Director.
