Cartoonist Mell Lazarus started his career as an assistant to Al Capp on the comic strip "Li'l Abner," and started his first comic, "Miss Peach," in 1957. In 1970 he created his second comic, "Momma," and went on to win his first National Cartoonist Society Humor Comic Strip Award two years later. He won it again in 1979, and the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1981.

Lazarus is also the author of two novels, and served as the President of the National Cartoonists Society from 1989 to 1993.
