Diabetic herbal remedies need more study

SYDNEY (UPI) -- There is positive evidence Chinese herbal medicines may prevent diabetes in those at high risk, an Australian review says, but more study is needed.

The Cochrane review of 16 studies finds combining herbal medicines with lifestyle changes is twice as effective as lifestyle changes alone at normalizing patients' blood sugar levels. However, the researchers concluded there was not enough hard scientific evidence to recommend their use.

"Our results suggest that some Chinese herbal medicines can help to prevent diabetes, but we really need more research before we can confidently say that these treatments work," lead researcher Suzanne Grant of the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, says in a statement. "The real value of the study is as guidance for further trials. We need to see more trials that make comparisons with placebos and other types of drugs, and better reporting on the outcomes of these trials."

The clinical trials included 1,391 people who received 15 different herbal formulations. Those given the herbal formulations were less likely to develop full blown diabetes during the study period.

Trials lasted from one month to two years and no adverse effects were reported.

Eliminating the craving for sugar

I know of three things that will help:

1. A good quality, balanced amino acid complex - available from any health food store. This will help to eliminate unhealthy cravings, especially nicotine and caffeine. I found I actually developed a desire for vegetables while on these. Be careful to follow the instructions. These are the basic building blocks of life and must not be thrown off balance.

2. Anti-candida regimen - get online and do research for a good quality program. Most people are full of yeast overgrowth due to antibiotics, hormones, sugar, to name a few. Doctors do not check for this nor do they tell a patient to follow up with probiotics after an antibiotic treatment or while a woman is on birth control pills. This allows unhealthy flora to florish, resulting in a yeast overgrowth. If this is not countered, it will then send out rhizomes and go systemic. In other words, it will keep on growing inside your body. Yeast feeds on sugar and thus perpetuates the sugar cravings.

3. Eliminate sugar from the diet and eat only healthy carbs such as whole wheat pasta or bread. This will not be possible without steps 1 and 2 above. Desserts ought to be reserved for special occasions, not expected every day.
