U.S. to use supercomputer for ocean data

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The IBM Corp. says the U.S. government has purchased a supercomputer to provide improved data for the nation's military and commercial ocean-going vessels.

IBM said the U.S. Department of Defense will use the Power 575 Hydro-Cluster, water-cooled supercomputer to provide some of the most detailed models of ocean waves, currents and temperature ever constructed to help scientists predict the behavior of the oceans with incredible precision.

Although to be primarily used by the U.S. Navy, the ocean models will be publicly accessible via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Web site, helping keep commercial ships out of harm's way. The ocean models will also be used by the U.S. Coast Guard to improve its search-and-rescue capabilities.

IBM said the supercomputer located at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi will also be used as a platform for research and development in ocean science and other areas vital to the nation's defense.

This is intended to protect lives - primarily used by the U.S. military! In fact this is congruent with numerous inventions being born out of research done for military purposes.

What I think of the eventual gross impact of using science and technology to save and prolong human life. Already we are the most dangerous species on the planet, acting against the interests of our own species on a global scale, let alone against the interests of other species. We exterminate at least one new species forever every single day day...

What will happen when we no longer have the resources to sustain humanity? We are losing land to oceans and deserts... and cities. The denser populations become the more people can breed; yet the greater the tensions in society. As global warming worsens mass migrations will happen, hundreds of millions of Africans being forced to flee to habitable climates - already overflowing with people. Life will eventually be seen as cheap rather than precious. Action must be taken now. Think-tanks must get to work and All must prepare for radical changes even within our own lifetimes.
