Dancing in Silks Upsets BC Sprint
Dancing in Silks, racing between horses down the stretch, got by pace-setting Cost of Freedom in the final jumps, finishing just a nose in front of Crown of Thorns. Cost of Freedom saved third, a head farther back.
Gayego, Godolphin Stables' standard-bearer, rallied quickly along the rail and finished fourth, another nose back.
The favorite, Zensational, broke a step slow from the inside post position, was unable to gain the lead and faded in the late going. Cost of Freedom established a fast pace, setting up the close finish.
With Joel Rosario in the irons, Dancing in Silks finished the 6 furlongs on the all-weather track in 1:08.14. Dancing in Silks is trained by Carla Gaines.
Sent off at odds of 25-1, Dancing in Silks paid $52.60 to win and keyed huge exacta and trifecta payouts.
Dancing in Silks, a 4-year-old, California-bred son of Black Minnaloushe, picked up his fourth straight win. The three previous victories all were in California sprints but the last two came in races restricted to state-breds, leading to questions about his ability against the world's top sprinters.
