Abreu re-signs with LA Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Outfielder Bobby Abreu has signed a deal that will keep him with the Los Angeles Angels for at least two more seasons, the team announced.

Abreu, 35, played his 14th major league season in Anaheim after the New York Yankees allowed him to become a free agent by not offering him a contract after the 2008 season. He hit .293 with 15 homers, 29 doubles, 30 stolen bases and 103 RBI in 563 at-bats for the Angels.

"The last three or four seasons have been (basically) the same (statistically)," Abreu said Thursday on the Angels' Web site. "My first time with them, I was very close to the World Series (so) why not stay? This is a team that gives you an opportunity to be in the playoffs."

With his seventh straight 100 RBI season, Abreu, a career .299 hitter, matched Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez. He also has stolen at least 20 bases in 11 straight seasons.
