Tsonga loses at Valencia Open
Tsonga was trailing 0-3 to Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the third set when a left wrist injury forced him to retire.
Tsonga won the first set, 7-6 (7-3), while Youzhny won the second, 6-0.
The loss dropped Tsonga 380 points behind No. 8-ranked Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the battle for a berth at next week's season-ending Paribas Masters at Paris.
Elsewhere Wednesday, fifth-seeded Gilles Simon of France topped Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; unseeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain beat sixth-seeded Gael Monfils 6-2, 7-5; Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic downed Romania's Victor Hanescu 6-4, 6-3; and Feliciano Lopez was a 7-5, 6-3 winner against fellow Spaniard Alberto Martin.
The eventual Valencia champion will collect $475,000.
