MLB: San Diego 12, Atlanta 5

ATLANTA (UPI) -- A two-run single by Luis Rodriguez highlighted a six-run sixth inning Wednesday that rallied San Diego to a 12-5 decision over Atlanta.

The Braves took a 3-0 lead into the sixth, but then saw the Padres score their 12 runs over the final four innings. San Diego banged out 18 of the game's 30 hits.

Atlanta slipped out of a second-place tie with Florida in the National League East and fell eight games behind Philadelphia for the division lead.

David Eckstein and Adrian Gonzalez each had three hits and two RBI for the Padres. Will Venable and Nick Hundley had run-scoring doubles in the big sixth inning.

San Diego went 9-for-21 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 men.

Tim Stauffer (2-6), who ended a four-start losing streak, allowed six runs and three hits over five innings.

Atlanta has lost the first two games of the series and on Thursday will be trying to avoid its first home sweep at the hands of San Diego since 1989.

Losing pitcher Kenshin Kawakami (6-10) surrendered four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3.
