MLB: Boston 8, Texas 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (UPI) -- Josh Beckett struck out seven over five scoreless innings Friday and the Boston Red Sox cruised to their fourth straight victory -- 8-1 over Texas.

The Red Sox moved within 2 ½ games of front-running Tampa Bay in the AL East.

Beckett (12-9) made his first start in almost three weeks after spending time on the disabled list with inflammation in his throwing elbow. He gave up four hits to the Rangers and, with the Red Sox owning a 5-0 lead, turned things over to the bullpen.

Mike Lowell ignited Boston's 12-hit attack with a solo homer in the second and contributed a two-run single in a four-run fourth. Lowell made it a four-RBI night with a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Boston roughed up Kevin Millwood (9-8) for six runs on nine hits over six innings. Millwood had won his previous three starts and had given up just four runs in a span of 24 2/3 innings.
