Cleveland overcame an early deficit and took a four-run advantage into the bottom of the ninth before Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run shot to bring the Tigers within two. Detroit lost its fourth in a row.
Grady Sizemore had two RBI for the Indians, winners of five out of seven against Detroit this year.
Fausto Carmona (7-5) lasted six innings to get the win, giving up four runs on seven hits. Justin Verlander (10-14) surrendered five runs on seven hits in six innings to take the loss.
Shoppach gave Cleveland a 5-4 lead in the fourth with his homer and Choo's blast came in the seventh, making it a 7-4 game.
The Indians moved within three victories of equaling its longest winning streak ever.
