DETROIT (UPI) -- Free agent right wing Marian Hossa Wednesday agreed
to a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
On day two of the league's free agent signing period, he joins the
team that beat his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in six games
in the battle for the NHL''s 2008 Stanley Cup title on June 4.
The Penguins acquired Hossa and left wing Pascal Dupuis at the
February trade deadline from Atlanta for Colby Armstrong, Erik
Christensen and Angelo Esposito and the 2008 first-round pick.
"It's fantastic," Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit Free
Press. "He fits into our philosophy in that he wants to win. He's a
two-way player
he's as good with the puck as without. To me, he's
one of the top 15 forwards in the game."
Hossa, 29, has compiled 648 points (299 goals and 349 assists) with a
plus-85 rating in 701 career games.
He was Ottawa' first-round pick in the 1997 NHL draft.
